Stay Away from Substations & Electric Lines

Beware of the dangers of a substation. The substation has a fence and barbed wire on top of it for a reason. The equipment inside of a substation fence uses HIGH VOLTAGE that could kill or seriously injure anyone coming in contact with it. It is very dangerous inside the fence due to the large amount of electricity flowing through the substation equipment. In substations we reduce high voltages to lower voltages for distribution to your home. Only authorized personnel are permitted into substations. If you see anyone other than a Northern Neck Electric Cooperative employee in the substation or if you see anything that may look strange please call our office immediately.

Electric Lines can also be a serious hazard. Overhead and Underground Electric Lines carry HIGH VOLTAGE that could kill or seriously injure anyone coming in contact with them. The following tips will help you to avoid coming into contact with energized electric lines:

  • Teach children never to climb trees, poles or buildings near power lines.
  • Teach children never to go inside or climb fences around substations.
  • Teach children not to play around underground electrical enclosures.
  • Never use metal ladders near electric lines.
  • Never put an antenna or other object in a position to contact the power line.
  • Never attempt to get kites or other objects off power lines or out of a substation.
  • Always check for overhead power lines before cutting trees or doing overhead work.
  • Always contact Miss Utility before you dig.
  • Always call the Cooperative if you need help to do a job safely.
  • Always report any dangerous conditions to the Cooperative as soon as possible.
